Dissident aggressors, unapologetic artists, naïve egoists, mycelium explorers. These are some of the personas adapted by multi-disciplinary experimentalists Jason Elijah Brown and Julianne Yost. The name of this exhibition is Jules and J, taken from the title of a French New Wave film, Jules and Jim (1962) directed by Francois Truffaut and this is no surprise, considering Brown and Yost’s shared artistic vision lies somewhere on the spectrum between subjective, personal, romantic/sensual, self-referential and the preposterous. The two respective artists create works of self-reflection and mythology, manifesting in the form of paintings and sculpture that communicate on biological, spectral wavelengths in a manner similar to the spores that inspired them.

Both artists coalesce their individual artistic sensibilities in the form of a collaborative mural created over the span of two months during brief, twenty-minute painting sessions where Brown and Yost merged visual shapes, figuration and color intuition to create a painting that, upon first glance, appears to be the work of a lone, individual artist. The mural is a touchstone of this presentation, unifying the aesthetic and conceptual variations between the two artists, and throughout the exhibition.

Maurice is a fatal love triangle between best friends, Jules, J, and Maurice.

Jules and J. J and Jules.

You said, "I love you." I said, "Wait." I was about to say, "Take me." You said, "Go away." -Maurice
