Maurice proudly presents, 100 Grand, a survey of photographs by Brooklyn-based, multi-disciplinary artist, Christian Michael-Filardo. This exhibition features an installation of 1,034 photographs that encapsulate a ten-year time period during the artist’s 20s, where they were free to explore the continental United States-visiting Arizona, New Mexico, California, New York, Virginia, Baltimore, Texas, and Colorado.

The images in this exhibition not only document Filardo’s wanderlust, but also convey a keen aesthetic sensibility that can be mistaken for no other artist. There is a virility not only in the personal perspective of work, but also in the scope and scale of this exhibition.

“There is a polarization in contemporary culture. I see a great avoidance in the obvious state of the capitalist society in which we find ourselves. It’s easy to hate America, and capitalism, especially when we’re so embroiled in it. There is something undeniably American about my photographs. I often look to the past, and feel like I’ve done nothing with my life. But my photography offers a fallacy of the document of experience.”

The photographs stir with the lamentation of former lovers and friendships, and offers the artist catharsis in the form of a collection of visual reminders of the past; emotions filed and rounded down by the pumice of time.

“Humans create the fantasy they want: the failed fantasy of being human. A human fantasy. The portals that humans make that get left alone. The Uncanny.”
